An Uphill City Needs a Different Floor Plan
Epoxy flooring in Upland has to account for something most flat valley towns do not: the ground tilts. Wikipedia notes that elevation rises 825 feet over 4.25 miles from south to north, from about 1,175 feet at 7th Street and Euclid Avenue to 2,000 feet at 24th Street. Many garages on the north side sit at the bottom of a steep driveway, and that changes how water, grit and leaves reach the slab.
Rain that runs toward the door
Upland averages about 24.5 inches of rain a year, according to Wikipedia, roughly twice what the Ontario airport records just to the south. Most of it falls in winter storms. On a sloped lot, that water runs down the driveway and stops at the garage door. Over the years, it leaves a stained, pitted strip at the threshold and sometimes a white mineral crust along the front edge.
When we coat a garage like that, we:
- Grind the threshold strip harder than the rest, since that is where the surface is weakest
- Fill pits and chipped edges so the coating ends on solid concrete
- Check moisture near the door, where it is most likely to show up
- Add texture to the finish so wet shoes and tires have grip
Older blocks around Euclid
The city began as North Ontario, the northern part of the Chaffey colony, and became Upland in 1906. The oldest part of town lies east of Euclid between 8th Street and Arrow Highway, an area once called Old Magnolia. Euclid Avenue itself was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. Homes in these older blocks often have small detached garages with thin, uneven slabs, past paint jobs and patched cracks. A flake system suits them well, because the chips hide the patchwork once the floor has been ground and repaired.
Patios with a mountain view
North of Foothill Boulevard, many homes have back patios facing the San Gabriel Mountains. Mount Baldy, at 10,064 feet, sits about 9.5 miles north of the city line. Those patios get full sun much of the year and runoff in winter. Plain epoxy breaks down outdoors, so we use a polyaspartic or aliphatic topcoat with grit, and we keep the surface sloped the way the concrete was poured so water still drains off.
Mount Baldy and the foothill streets
On the northern streets the grade gets steeper and many lots get larger. Many of these homes have side-entry or tandem garages, with more square footage to coat and more joints to repair. Leaves and debris from the foothills also blow in. We check the slope of the slab toward the door so the finished floor still drains the way it was poured, and we coat stem walls and steps so dirt has fewer places to collect.
Owners, renters and the timing of a job
The 2020 census counted 28,641 housing units in Upland, with 54.6% owner-occupied. Renters can ask a landlord about a coating before move-in, and owners often book in late spring or fall. Winter storms can make a garage damp for a few days, so we check moisture on the morning of the job and reschedule if the slab is wet.

Upland Conditions That Affect Your Floor
- A steady climb north. Elevation rises 825 feet over 4.25 miles, from 1,175 feet at 7th Street and Euclid to 2,000 feet at 24th Street and Euclid.
- Wetter than the valley floor. Upland averages about 24.5 inches of rain a year, with most of it falling in winter under a hot-summer Mediterranean climate.
- Historic Euclid Avenue. Euclid Avenue was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, and the oldest neighborhood, once called Old Magnolia, lies east of it.

Upland Questions
Water pools at my garage door every winter. Can a coating still work?
Usually, yes. We grind and repair the damaged strip by the door, test moisture there, and finish with a textured coat. If water is coming under the door because of the driveway grade, we will point that out so you can address drainage too.
My detached garage in old Upland has paint and patches. Do I need new concrete?
Most of the time, no. Grinding removes old paint and loose patch material, and we refill cracks with a repair compound. A slab that is crumbling or heaving badly needs concrete work first, and we will tell you that at the estimate.
Do you coat patios on the hillside lots north of Foothill?
Yes. Outdoor slabs get a UV-stable topcoat with grit, and we keep the existing slope so rainwater still drains. Cracks from settling are filled first, and we tell you if any section is lifting enough to need concrete work.
