When Polyaspartic Makes Sense Here

Polyaspartic floor coating is a type of polyurea that cures much faster than epoxy and resists UV far better. In Ontario, both of those matter. Many garages sit with the door open on summer afternoons, letting direct sun hit the floor for hours. Plain epoxy can turn amber under that light. Polyaspartic stays clear. HomeGuide's comparison table rates its UV resistance as excellent, against poor to fair for standard epoxy, and lists a full cure of 24 to 48 hours against up to a week for epoxy.

The heat question

Fast cure has a catch on hot days. Polyaspartic sets quickly, and heat makes it set faster. On a 95-degree afternoon, the working time can shrink to a few minutes, which leaves lap marks and poor flow if the crew is not ready. We schedule polyaspartic work for the cooler early hours in summer, keep batches small and match the product's speed to the temperature. Ontario's mild winters, with an average January high of 67.7°F at the airport, are an easy time to install it.

How we use it

  • As a full system: polyaspartic base and topcoat, often with flakes, for a one- or two-day garage.
  • As a topcoat over epoxy: an epoxy base for thickness and bond, finished with a polyaspartic clear coat for UV and scratch resistance.
  • Outdoors: on patios and covered porches, where it holds color in sun that would break down epoxy.

HomeGuide notes that polyaspartic goes on thinner per coat than epoxy, about 2 to 6 mils versus 10 to 20. On a rough or pitted Ontario slab, that means more repair and grinding first, or an epoxy base to build thickness.

Prep is the same, or stricter

Because polyaspartic grabs fast, it gives no time to soak into a poorly prepped surface. We diamond grind, fill cracks and joints, and get the floor clean and dry before the first pass. On new Ontario Ranch slabs, we grind off any builder sealer or curing compound. On older garages, oil spots are degreased and ground until clean concrete shows.

Is it worth the extra cost?

HomeGuide puts polyaspartic at $5 to $12 per square foot, against $4 to $10 for epoxy. You pay more for speed and sun resistance. If your garage faces west, if you need the car back inside quickly, or if the floor runs out onto a sunny patio, it usually pays off. For a closed, shaded garage where downtime does not matter, an epoxy system with a good topcoat may be all you need. We lay out both at the estimate.

Care

The coating cleans with a pH-neutral cleaner and a soft mop. Sweep grit after wind events. Avoid sliding heavy metal items across it, and put pads under jack stands and motorcycle kickstands.

Polyaspartic Floor Coating Questions

Is polyaspartic better than epoxy?

It cures faster and resists UV much better, and it costs more. Epoxy builds thicker per coat and bonds well to ground concrete. Many of our floors use an epoxy base with a polyaspartic topcoat to get both.

Can polyaspartic be installed in summer heat?

Yes, with care. Heat shortens working time, so we start early in the day, mix small batches and choose a slower-setting formula when it is hot.

How soon can I drive on a polyaspartic floor?

HomeGuide lists full cure at 24 to 48 hours. We give you a specific time based on the product and temperature on the day.

Can I install polyaspartic myself?

HomeGuide describes it as not DIY-friendly because it sets so fast. Mistakes show as lap marks or spots that did not bond, and fixing them means grinding them off.
