Outdoor Concrete in a Dry, Sunny Valley
Patio and pool deck coatings face a different job than garage floors. Outside, the main threat is the sun. Ontario's airport station averages only about 35 wet days a year and 11.6 inches of rain, so a backyard slab spends most of the year in direct light. Plain epoxy breaks down under UV, turning yellow and chalky. Outdoor work here calls for coatings built for sun, with grit added so the surface stays safe when it is wet from a pool, a sprinkler or a hose.
What outdoor slabs look like here
Backyard concrete in Ontario often shows:
- Cracks from settlement and from tree roots near old citrus or shade trees
- Faded or peeling paint from a previous owner
- Rust spots from patio furniture and grills
- Grit worked into the surface after Santa Ana wind events
- Rough, worn areas around pool coping and steps
Each of those gets handled before a coating goes on. A coating will not hold over loose paint or a crack that keeps moving.
Systems for outdoor use
- Polyaspartic flake systems: a speckled, textured finish with a UV-stable clear coat. Popular for covered patios and side walkways.
- Solid color with grit: a single color, often light to reflect heat, with aggregate in the topcoat.
- Pool deck coatings: light-colored, textured systems around pools. HomeGuide describes Kool Deck style coatings as non-slip and helping lower surface temperatures.
- Sealing only: for sound decorative or stamped concrete that just needs protection. HomeGuide lists sealing at $1 to $3 per square foot.
Color and surface temperature
Dark concrete coatings get hot in July sun. For pool decks and any patio people walk on barefoot, we steer toward lighter colors and textured finishes. Those stay cooler to the touch and hide dust and leaf debris between cleanings. On covered patios, you have more room to choose darker blends.
How we prep outdoor concrete
Outdoor slabs get diamond ground or shot blasted to remove paint, sealers and weak surface. Cracks are routed and filled. Expansion joints stay as joints, since outdoor concrete moves more than garage slabs and filling those joints with rigid material leads to cracking. Around pools, we tape and protect the coping, tile and water line, and we time the work so the pool area can dry before coating.
Care and recoating
Rinse the surface and sweep off grit regularly. Clean up pool chemical spills and rust spots promptly. Outdoor topcoats wear faster than indoor ones because of sun and foot traffic. A worn topcoat can be lightly sanded and recoated without redoing the whole system, which costs much less than starting over.

We tell you when the area can take foot traffic, furniture and pool use.

Patio & Pool Deck Coatings Questions
Can you put epoxy on an outdoor patio?
Plain epoxy fades and yellows in sun, so outdoors we use UV-stable polyaspartic or aliphatic topcoats. Epoxy can still be used as a base under a UV-stable topcoat on covered areas.
Will a coated pool deck be slippery?
Not if it has texture. We add grit to the topcoat or use a textured system, and we recommend lighter colors that stay cooler underfoot.
How much does it cost to coat a 500 square foot pool deck?
HomeGuide's range for a 500 square foot pool deck resurfacing is $1,500 to $6,000. Crack repair, removing old coatings and the system you choose decide where you land.
Can a cracked patio be coated?
Small cracks are routed and filled before coating. A slab that has heaved or has wide, moving cracks may need concrete repair or replacement first, and we will tell you that at the estimate.
