Decorative Floors on Slab-on-Grade Homes
Metallic epoxy floors are poured epoxy mixed with metallic pigments, worked by hand while wet so the color moves into swirls, ripples and depth. No two come out the same. In Ontario, many homes sit directly on a concrete slab, which means the floor under your carpet or tile is already a candidate. Pull up worn flooring in a family room, office or converted garage and the slab underneath can become the finished floor.
Moisture comes first
A slab on grade sits on the ground, and moisture can rise through it even in a dry climate. If too much vapor pushes up under a sealed epoxy floor, it can lift or blister. Before we quote a metallic floor inside a home, we test the slab. If readings are high, we use a moisture-tolerant primer or tell you the floor needs another approach. HomeGuide lists moisture and hardness testing at $50 to $300 when it is billed separately.
What it takes to get a slab ready
Interior slabs in Ontario homes often hold tile adhesive, carpet tack strip holes, paint and patches from past remodels. Metallic finishes show every flaw underneath, so prep is heavier than for a flake floor.
- Remove old flooring, adhesive and tack strips
- Diamond grind the whole floor to an even profile
- Fill cracks, holes and low spots, then grind flush
- Apply a primer and a solid base color
- Pour and work the metallic layer
- Seal with a clear topcoat chosen for scratch and UV resistance
Where metallic floors work well
- Living rooms and family rooms: a single seamless surface with no grout lines.
- Home offices and game rooms: durable under chairs and easy to clean.
- Converted garages and ADUs: common in Inland Empire homes where a garage becomes living space.
- Small retail spaces, salons and studios: a distinctive floor in a business setting.
Metallic finishes are less suited to working garages. They show dust, tire marks and scratches more than flake floors.
Picking colors
We bring samples and photos of completed metallic patterns. Grays and silvers look like polished stone. Bronzes and coppers suit warm interiors. Blues and deep greens make a bold statement in game rooms. Natural light changes how the finish reads, so we look at samples in your room before you commit.
Living with it
Use felt pads on furniture legs and rugs at doors to catch grit. Clean with a pH-neutral cleaner. A satin topcoat hides fine scratches better than high gloss, and a worn topcoat can be lightly sanded and recoated years later without redoing the metallic layer.

How It Works
1. Test and plan
We test moisture, look at the slab and pick colors with you in the room.
2. Strip and prep
Old flooring and adhesive come up, and the slab is ground and repaired.
3. Pour and shape
Base color goes down, then the metallic layer is poured and worked by hand.
4. Seal and cure
A clear topcoat is applied, and we tell you when furniture can come back.

Metallic Epoxy Floors Questions
How much does a metallic epoxy floor cost?
This Old House puts metallic epoxy at $5 to $12 per square foot. Removing old flooring, leveling and slab repair add to that, so we price after seeing the room.
Can metallic epoxy go over tile?
We remove tile and adhesive and coat the concrete underneath. Coating over tile leaves grout lines that show through and a bond only as good as the tile's own.
Is metallic epoxy slippery?
A high-gloss finish can be slick in socks or when wet. We can add a fine anti-slip additive to the topcoat that keeps the look while adding grip.
Will the floor feel cold?
It feels like polished stone, firm and cool. In Ontario's warm months many people like that, and area rugs soften it in seating areas.
